The Jo staff has a good balance and is weighty and solid enough for fairly heavy practice sparring but as with any wooden weapon there's always the distinct possibility of breakage if a fierce wood to wood collision occurs. That said this one has quite a substantial feel and as long as the practitioner has a decent level of skill and control when practising contact techniques then the risk of breakage should be minimal, just be careful! This was actually bought for my son who badly wanted a Bo staff but he is only around 4ft tall so this Jo works as a Bo staff for him. The one i received was straight which always helps and the balance point is extremely close to dead centre, coupled with the weight and sturdiness it makes this Jo staff a perfect practice "small person" Bo staff! For myself the gauge and weight of this item makes it good for spinning practices mostly but could potentially stand up to some quite substantial contact sparring practice should i take the small risk of breaking the weapon. Overall for the price, speed of delivery and points mentioned i highly recommend this item.
